The Outcasts Creative Present

By Lance Steen Anthony Nielsen

The worst travesty of justice in the history of Britain humorously exposed

In 1999 Horizon, a new computer system was installed in Post Offices nationwide. There was only one problem, it was prone to bugs and the designers were aware of this. Soon Postmasters across the UK were experiencing mysterious shortfalls of thousands of pounds that they were liable for.

The issue escalated with hundreds facing financial bankruptcy as they struggled to remedy the situation out of their own pocket, all while the Post Office did nothing to rectify the problem. In fact, they had an aggressive policy of prosecuting Postmasters, securing criminal convictions, and using the courts to strip them of all their financial assets. Even when those in charge knew these convictions were unsafe, they still let innocent people go to prison.

For the first time on the British stage, this dark satire is the 14th play from award-winning playwright Lance Steen Anthony Nielsen. He shines a light on this tragic story, giving a voice to those impacted and highlighting where the responsibility lies in one of the most shameful travesties of injustice in our country's history. The Outcasts Creative was founded by Lance & Dickon Tolson in the summer of 2019, producing their first play, Borderlands, later that year. Dickon & Lance both previously taught drama at Timber Theatre which was founded by the late Graham Fletcher and his brother Dexter. Lance first visited the Questors Theatre in the 1980s to see all the plays that his father's friend, Tony Worth, was involved in. It was seeing this work which sparked his ambitions to become a playwright. Now staging his first play at the venue feels as if these events have finally come full circle.
